Cousins DVD review

first_imgCredit: TLA ReleasingLucas (Paulo Sousa) lives with his religious aunt Lourdes (Juliana Zancanaro) and he helps her run religious meetings with the local ladies. Introverted, Lucas doesn’t have any friends apart from his student Julia (Duda Esteves) who is slowly becoming obsessed with him. Lourdes agrees to house another nephew Mario (Thiago Cazado), who is fresh out of prison and in need of a roof over his head to get back on the right path. At first Lucas is wary of his distant cousin but soon the attraction between the two boys becomes too strong.Cousins is written, co-directed and stars Thiago Cazado, and it’s a lighter look at what coming-to-terms with your blossoming sexuality can be like. The story is set in the middle of a religious community, which automatically makes its subject matter contentious. Add in that the film is made in Brazil given the current climate there for the LGBT community, and you have all the ingredients needed for conflict and matters of the heart.Credit: TLA ReleasingInterestingly Cazado and his co-director Mauro Carvalho don’t go down the well-trodden misery and tears route that so many coming-of-age films do. Instead they inject a sense of fun into the proceedings and the whole film has a zippy pace and wide-eyed optimism. There’s a wonderful moment where Lourdes checks on the boys and finds them in bed together asleep. At first it looks like she may have rumbled their secret love affair but instead she writes it off as a special love between cousins.Mario’s arrival brings Lucas out of his shell and gives him a purpose and enthusiasm for life he was missing before. As Lucas falls for Mario, he has to fight off the advances of Julia who goes to extreme lengths to be constantly around him. That storyline gets a little too far-fetched but the eventual comeuppance that you know she’ll get, is actually worth waiting for. There’s a random detour into witchcraft, which I presume was added for comedic affect, but the film really didn’t need it.Credit: TLA ReleasingIt’s actually pretty refreshing to watch a film like this and end with a smile on your face. While the final moments may leave you feeling that things were tied up all too quickly and conveniently, there’s something quite nice about a gay film that leaves you feeling happy rather than bawling your eyes out.The chemistry between Cazado and Paulo Sousa is electric. From the moment their two characters meet, you know it’s only a matter of time before their clothes come off and they give in to their desires. The sex scenes are surprisingly lengthy and if titillation is what you’re after than there’s plenty to be found here.Cousins is a light, fun and entertaining coming-of-age drama with a lot of heart and plenty of laughs. It’s not a perfect film but it breezes by nicely and will leave a smile on your face. As a gay man, I find it refreshing to watch a gay film that isn’t about the struggle and instead just embraces the passion between two boys (even if they are distant cousins!).Cast: Thiago Cazado, Paulo Sousa, Duda Esteves, Juliana Zancanaro Directors: Mauro Carvalho, Thiago Cazado Writer: Thiago Cazado Certificate: 18 Duration: 83 mins Released by: TLA Releasing Release date: 1st November (US) 9th December (UK) Buy Cousinslast_img read more

Martin takes on all comers to win

StablefordEleven golfers took up the challenge and travelled out to have a crack at Emerald Golf Course. Usually a good course but from time to time it can be a bit dry.The course as it played was in good nic, all in all it wasn’t too bad. Yet again there was nobody on the course, we virtually had it to ourselves. Weather was good to us yet again but as the day got longer it did heat up and became a little uncomfortable but at the end of the day it is Thailand and we know that it can get hot. We were playing one flight only and again with all novelties in play, would love to be in a position to play more than the one flight.Well to say the result was close would be an understatement and the scores were pretty good as well. Both Martin Kempton and Robert Cross returned with 41 points. To the countback to sort this out and as it turned out 1 point (on the back nine) was the difference between the two of them. Third spot again had to be referred to the countback. After both golfers returned with 39 points, it was Paul Sharples who got the nod from Dave Maw. EL GRAN DERBI: THE EARLIEST SEVILLE DERBY SINCE 1987/88

first_imgAdvertisement wxpNBA Finals | Brooklyn Vsb3s74Wingsuit rodeo📽Sindre E3r( IG: @_aubreyfisher @imraino ) ccz51Would you ever consider trying this?😱gjj7Can your students do this? 🌚poRoller skating! Powered by Firework Real Betis and Sevilla FC will meet this Sunday evening (20:45 CEST) at Betis’ Benito Villamarín stadium for the first Seville derby of the new season. This will be the earliest these two teams have met in a LaLiga Santander season since they faced off over 30 years ago on the opening weekend of the 1987/88 campaign.Advertisement This makes an already spicy derby even more mouth-watering, as the result could set the tone for the rest of the season. Both teams’ squads are still getting used to playing with each other, but there’s no such thing as a dress rehearsal when it comes to ‘El Gran Derbi.’ This derby match means everything to the fans, who’ll demand, as always, that their heroes approach it like a cup final.Advertisement Real Betis, nicknamed Los Verdiblancos (‘The Green and Whites’), finished above their city rivals last year in sixth while Sevilla, who also goes by the name of Los Rojiblancos (‘The Red and Whites’), finished in seventh. Sevilla will be desperate to earn a first derby victory since February 2017, especially after Betis’ stunning 5-3 away win at the Sanchez-Pizjuan in January.El Gran Derbi sets to the tone for the seasonAdvertisement  At this early stage in the season, it’s too soon to know exactly what these clubs will be competing for come May. It is more than likely, though, that they’ll both be in the mix for European qualification. Both have had busy summers in terms of player acquisition and there is an expectation amongst fans of both sides that their teams are more than good enough to secure a European spot once again.Betis will need a positive result to start their campaign off on the right foot. They’re yet to score this season despite racking up an average of 72.3% possession in their opening two games and were punished on the counter-attack in the home opener against Levante before picking up a goalless draw at Alaves on Matchday 2.Sevilla’s start has been more positive, winning 4-1 away at LaLiga Santander new boys Rayo Vallecano before a playing out a goalless draw with fellow European contenders Villarreal. Pablo Machin’s side has been in Europa League qualification action since late July and their fitness levels are at a mid-season level. That said, there’ll be no complacency ahead of a game as important as this one.New faces, same old rivalry One position to keep an eye on this Sunday is goalkeeper as both clubs signed new starting shot-stoppers over the summer. Antonio Adan and Sergio Rico, last season’s first-choice keepers, have moved on. Betis now how to have Pau Lopez between the sticks, while Sevilla brought in Czech international Tomáš Vaclík.Betis’ summer signing Takashi Inui could also be important as the Japanese winger’s dribbling ability provides them with a more direct option in attack, while new Sevilla striker André Silva will surely trouble the Betis defense. Silva scored a hat-trick on his LaLiga debut at Rayo Vallecano and he’ll be looking to make this a similarly happy away trip.Seville, a city divided El Gran Derbi is so important to Seville because the city is, curiously, split right down the middle. Unlike in many other cities in Spain and across Europe, the two clubs boast a similarly sized support, something that only increases the stakes and, of course, the decibel levels! Both clubs have been in existence for over a century, making this one of the longest-running rivalries in football. Officially the first derby took place in 1915, with Betis winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Alberto Henke. The derby was already considered such a big deal that the victors paraded through the city center with the trophy they’d been awarded. Unofficially, though, these two clubs have been at loggerheads even longer and an earlier incarnation of Betis first took on Sevilla on Valentine’s Day, 1909. It may have been a day of love, but there has never been any love lost between these two clubs since then. Though there is resentment between the two fanbases, there is also a good-natured and humorous side to this rivalry. Jokes, arguments, and pranks have always been part of the derby and the moment two Betis-supporting builders emblazoned the Betis badge onto Sevilla’s stadium during construction works will live long in the memory of fans. From Seville to the world On an international level, the profile of the derby is growing day by day. Sevilla has won five Europa League titles since the turn of the century while Betis have rolled out an exciting possession-based style of football under coach Quique Setien, piquing the interests of football purists both at home and abroad. With official supporter groups stretching from Scotland to New York City, these clubs continue to grow in stature every day.Photos: https://we.tl/t-gnwAiM8mRB Advertisementlast_img read more

For TechStars Startups, Life Beyond the Pitch

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… When it comes right down to it, Demo Day is just that. A day. It is not like these companies build their products at breakneck speeds for four months and then cease to be companies. Demo Day is the unofficial graduation for TechStars companies and there is the requisite amount of celebrating afterward. Entrepreneurs drink champagne and beer in the office, eat catered food, and pat each other on the back after Demo Day is over. There is much to be happy about, especially for those companies that used Demo Day to raise additional funding. But it is really just the beginning. “What happens beyond that is that they are trying to get investors. They have to build investor stories and then they also have to build customer stories. When they go up to a customer, they have to be able to tell their story. Same with investors. Same with Demo Day,” Rae said. When preparing CEOs for Demo Day pitches, Rae urges the aspiring executives to be themselves. When it comes to pitches, there is a lot of information available on the Web, and CEOs can trap themselves into thinking that their pitch needs to look exactly like somebody else’s perfect pitch. Rae tries to cull that out of people and focus on getting them to tell their story. “Some people take that too far,” Rae said. “Come up with crazy ideas about coming in from the ceiling and things that are kind of cutesy. And some of them just take it too far. Some of that is OK. If it doesn’t match your company, you shouldn’t do it. If you are not funny, you shouldn’t try to be funny.”The most impassioned, if unorthodox, pitch of the day came from Libboo’s Howard. He said he was coached to provide a lot of data in his pitch because it is a little difficult to understand the concept. He had a full deck of slides waiting to go on Friday before the presentation the next Thursday. In the end, he tossed that pitch, something he had been working on for the better part of a month, and went with his heart. In the end, it was not about the marketing and stats of his platform but rather an emotional soliloquy about his journey and his company.“I was really genuine when I said that I want people to understand ‘the who’ and ‘the why’ more than ‘the how’ and ‘the what.’ That is so important to me. Everybody says, team, team, team, team, team, and that is true, and everybody does invest in a team. As an early-stage startup, for me, you are never going to change your founders or CEO, and it is about team but it is more about founders and CEOs. So, I wanted to create a pitch that is more about me than the product itself,” Howard said. TechStars ends with Demo Day. For the companies, Demo Day is just the beginning. The skills that companies learn will be carried with them for as long as they exist. As Rae said, if a company cannot nail the pitch, they are done. That is a lesson that extends well past the day those companies leave TechStars.  As a startup, “if you cannot nail a presentation, you’re done.” That is what Katie Rae, managing director of TechStars Boston, said after the accelerator’s Demo Day yesterday. 13 TechStars companies went on stage to pitch their products to investors, and every single pitch passed with flying colors.Getting the pitch right is one of the most important parts of a startup’s life cycle. It is vital to nail the Demo Day pitch, of course, but learning how to give a thoughtful, dynamic presentation is a skill that pays benefits far beyond the stage. The pitches at Demo Day Boston were as varied as the companies presenting them. Timothy Ericson, the CEO of Zagster, the “Zipcar for bikes,” rode out on stage on a branded bicycle. K Young, CEO of Mortar, a company working to “fix” Hadoop, stood in solemn profile describing how his company is going to create tools to make big data usable to any company. The pitch for Libboo, a book publishing and promotion platform, started with a stirring poem from slam poet Marshall “Soulful” Jones before CEO Chris Howard gave an impassioned speech about the problems his company is trying to solve.  Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#start#StartUp 101#startups#Venture Funding center_img 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Not every company from the spring class of TechStar’s Boston 2012 is going to go on to fame and fortune. There are a couple very strong companies and a few others that may have trouble surviving in crowded markets. But, when it came to the pitch, nearly every one of them earned an “A” for the day.Rae and the TechStars staff prepare companies for the Demo Day pitch from Day One at the accelerator. It starts with the elevator pitch, where teams present their idea and then get drilled with hard questions to see how well the pitch, and by extension the company, holds up. In the third month of TechStars, CEOs start practicing their pitches nearly every day for a month before the fateful Demo Day. “It is never a simple process. The first days of TechStars is like, ‘Are you sure you are on the right track?’ That is where you pitch your idea and pitch your company to a hundred really hard people and have them ask really hard questions,” Rae said. “The second thing is to really dig in and to make sure you are getting the right data and customer development. And then the third thing is that once you know you are on the right track, how do you tell a story? How do you get across to the other people why you care about it, why it is important to you and what you are trying to do. That’s is where I start. Why do you care and why should I care?” dan rowinski Related Posts “I think the first [mistake] is that they get very robotic and they think their pitch needs to look like the last person that did a great pitch and they need to copy it. Never works. So we often have to rewind people out of that. ‘Wait, but Jeff did a pitch just like that and it was perfect.’ But that is not your story. It has to be authentic or it will flop,” Rae said.Another mistake is trying to cram too much data into a presentation. Companies create decks of dozens of slides, trying to get everything they possibly can into the pitch. Those crowded decks often look terrible, especially when projected on a 20-foot screen behind the CEO. Here, the “KISS” principle comes into play: Keep It Simple, Stupid. There is also a degree of showmanship to a pitch. Demo Day’s first presenter, CEO Winston Mok of Simply Good Technologies – a company working on mobile couponing based on influence – showed plenty of charisma and showmanship on stage. That works for Mok and his product. It might not work for Michael Nugent of Bison Alternatives, a company working on a database for alternative investments. Ericson riding out on a bike works. Dropping from the ceiling? Not so much.last_img read more

Letter from the Editor

first_imgParekh (centre) in MoscowThe editorial decision on how best to cover Prime Minister Morarji Desai’s official tour of Moscow and East Europe last fortnight, proved a tricky one. What was required was a fresh, original approach rather than a drab and detailed account of the agreements signed and the well-worn cliches on Indo-Soviet amity. The answer literally dropped into our editorial lap in the form of a stocky, pugnacious, bearded character festooned with cameras – KISHOR PAREKH, the doyen of India’s camera corps. His suggestion that India Today’s coverage of Desai’s visit should be essentially a pictorial one, was accepted with alacrity. Parekh has an enviable reputation of producing the unusual, and judging from the results of his recent tour he has lived upto it.His rare, behind-the-scenes pictures featured in this issue are an evocative tribute to his photographic genius. “Desai is probably the most difficult and dull subject in the world to photograph,” he said on his return. On one occasion in Moscow, he waited while other news cameramen guzzled vodka. His patience paid off. He was the only photographer present when Desai began to spin his charkha under the chandeliers in the Kremlin. Behind all the egoistic bluster that Parekh sports, is a man intensely dedicated to his art. He took his Masters in cinema from the University of Southern California. While there, he was awarded six of the seven prizes in an international contest sponsored by the National Press Photographers’ Association, Encyclopaedia Britannica and Life magazine. On his return to India in 1961 he joined a newspaper group in Delhi as chief photographer and made his mark in covering the Sino-lndian war of 1962 and Indo-Pakistan war of 1965. One of his best known works is his moving record of the traumatic birth of Bangladesh.Since then he has moved to the more lucrative field of commercial photography and only occasionally dabbles in news assignments. His pictures from Russia will form part of a photobiography he is compiling on the prime minister and will follow his recently published pictorial book on another prominent octogenarian, business tycoon G.D. My wife loves to see me express myself on the field: Suresh Raina

first_imgSuresh Raina.Marriage begins a new chapter in a person’s life, but such is the life of present day Indian cricketers that they hardly get any time for their personal lives and families. When they are not on national duty, they are on club duty – playing in the Indian Premier League. So even though it has been a while since Suresh Raina got married to his childhood friend Priyanka Chaudhary, on April 3, he is yet to go on a honeymoon as the batsman has been busy plying his trade for Chennai Super Kings in the eighth edition of the IPL.But thankfully for Raina, his wife isn’t complaining as she understands the demands of marrying an India cricketer. In fact, Raina feels lucky to have a considerate partner who is happy to see him go out on the field and express himself.”Marriage hasn’t changed anything and there is no added pressure on me now that my wife is watching me play. The simple reason is that she loves to see me express myself on the field as she knows that I enjoy that a lot and that makes her happy as well. I am blessed indeed to have her as my partner,” he told Mail Today.Suresh Raina and childhood friend Priyanka Chaudhary got married on April 3 this year, just before the IPL began.Coming back to the cricketing side of things, there is no denying the fact that Raina is not only an integral part of CSK, but also one of the best T20 players in the world. He has not missed a single T20 game that Chennai have played and his record stands at an impressive 3,671 runs from 130 games – the most in the history of the cash-rich league. But going by Raina’s standards, this season hasn’t panned out the way the last seven have. He has managed 346 runs from 15 games with just two half-centuries. While he has got starts, he hasn’t managed to capitalise on them and score big like in the past. But Raina isn’t complaining and is happy to be middling the ball in the final phase of the tournament.advertisement”I don’t like to think too hard. I have been middling the ball well. It was just a matter of time before I scored runs. Right now I am really looking forward to finishing the season on a high,” he revealed.Talking of CSK and not mentioning Ashish Nehra is almost impossible this season.
