GDP slips in November: StatsCan

Julian Beltrame Household debt-to-income ratio fell in first quarter: Statscan Keywords Economic indicators Leading indicators signal steady rebound: OECD Related news Opposition critics called on the federal government to hike spending to support growth and jobs, rather than seek further savings in an effort to balance the budget. “With 72,000 jobs lost in two months (October, November), Canada needs a jobs budget, not a cuts budget,” said Liberal finance critic Scott Brison. The NDP’s Peter Julian warned the government’s announced intentions “are a serious, serious mistake,” noting that the GDP setback is only the latest of a “litany” of indicators showing the economy braking — from jobs creation, to the trade and current account deficit to the fall in real wages. In the House, question period was dominated by criticism of another government cost-saving initiative, reforms to Old Age Security that would see Ottawa pay less than currently projected on income support to seniors in future years. Prime Minister Harper defended his plans, saying OAS needs to be put on a sustainable track for the future, adding that seniors already receiving benefits would not be affected. November’s surprising weakness to output — a 0.2% gain had been expected — brings economic growth over the last three recorded months to a snail-paced 0.7%. Analysts noted that most of November’s weakness was due to one sector — oil and gas extraction, in part due to temporary maintenance shutdowns — but also pointed out there was not enough strength elsewhere in the economy to fill the gap. “While we can brush it off as due to weakness in one sector, the fact is nothing else stepped up to the plate to offset that weakness, and that just shows how sluggish the underlying economy is,” said Douglas Porter, deputy chief economist with the Bank of Montreal. Several private sector forecasters, including BMO, quickly downgraded their outlooks for the fourth quarter of 2011 by about half a point, saying that the Bank of Canada’s projection of two per cent expansion now seems out of reach. Porter also wondered whether the federal government, which is expected to table its next budget in just over a month, should be contemplating major cutbacks. The federal government is committed to cut at least $4 billion in the next three years — in addition to other spending restraint — and recent statements from ministers suggest the slashing could reach $8 billion. Based on the lower figure, the Centre for Policy Alternatives estimates job losses throughout the country would top 60,000 over the next three years. Even before these fresh measures, Ottawa and the provinces were winding down the stimulus spending brought in to offset a global credit crisis that sparked the 2008-09 recession. With less government spending, the public sector is likely to represent a net drag to growth in 2012 as opposed to a boost in 2011. “I can sympathize with unwinding the stimulus, I just wonder if the appetite for restraint should be as heavy as it seems to be,” said Porter. “We need to make sure that growth stays on track before we start carving heavily on spending.” In the most recent economic review from the Bank of Canada, the government sector was forecast to cost the economy 0.1% in output this year, compared to contributing 0.3% in 2011 and 1.2% in 2010. Union economist Erin Weir of the United Steelworkers said a reduction in public investments “could push Canada’s fragile economy back into recession.” The last three months of 2011 has also seen about 55,000 jobs vanish, although December was a net positive and analysts expect Statistics Canada will confirm a modest employment pickup in January as well when it reports Friday. Most private sector economists believe it would take an external shock such as a full-blown European financial crisis to tip Canada into a recession. The likely scenario is slow growth below two per cent, they say, a view shared by the central bank and the International Monetary Fund. The last few months of data shows there are few strong engines of growth in Canada’s economy. November’s big loser was oil and gas extraction, down 2.5%. But wholesale trade, finance and insurance, and construction also saw outright shrinkage, part of the overall 0.6% retreat in the goods-producing sector. Some comfort can be taken that manufacturing rose 0.6%, led by the auto sector, said CIBC economist Emanuella Enenajor. Other gainers were retail trade, accommodation and food services, professional services and real estate agents and brokers services. The Canadian economic recovery is showing signs of stalling, even as Ottawa prepares for an austerity budget that further slashes public sector contributions to growth. Statistics Canada reported Tuesday that real gross domestic product actually shrank by 0.1% in November, following zero growth in October. One win away from Madison

first_imgAfter beating Stratford, Spencer/Columbus faces Shoreland Lutheran with a trip to the state championship on the lineBy Paul LeckerSports ReporterSPENCER — The Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team had its struggles in the first half against a Stratford defense that was ready to fight. Two turnovers did not hurt the Rockets as their defense rose to the occasion, and when they forced two turnovers and blocked a punt in the second half, Spencer/Columbus pulled away for a 30-15 win in a WIAA Division 5 Level 3 playoff game on Nov. 6 at Spencer High School.Three plays in the third quarter defined the Rockets’ victory.A 39-yard run by Noah Zastrow set up a touchdown on Spencer/Columbus’ first drive of the second half, Dakota Andreae blocked a punt that Ryan Busse recovered in the end zone for a score, and Hunter Luepke recovered a fumble that was followed by an Elijah Welsh touchdown run to push an 8-0 halftime lead to a 30-0 advantage.Next up for the Rockets (12-0) is Shoreland Lutheran in a D-5 Level 4 state semifinal on Friday night at Ingalls Field in Ripon. The game will be broadcast on WOSQ-FM 92.3 and wdlbwosq.com.Spencer/Columbus has never made it this far in the postseason in the 14 years of the co-op program. Shoreland Lutheran’s three playoff wins are its first since winning a Level 1 game in 2005.The winner moves on to the Division 5 state championship game at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 4 p.m.against either defending D-5 runner-up Amherst or Arcadia, who play Friday night in Eau Claire.Shoreland Lutheran (10-2) placed third in the Metro Classic Conference standings this season, losing to conference champion Burlington Catholic Central 49-30 and second-place Kenosha St. Joseph 28-22. Since the Kenosha St. Joseph loss on Oct. 2, the Pacers have won five in a row, including a 35-21 victory over Marshall last week in a Level 3 playoff.“The focus has been great,” Spencer/Columbus coach Jason Gorst said. “I have not noticed any difference in the way guys are preparing for our next opponent. We have really taken a week-by-week approach this season, so this is the first time that we can actually say it is a team goal to get to Madison.”The Pacers have a diversified offense, with quarterback Nik Lange throwing for 1,331 yards and 22 touchdowns with just five interceptions. Keenan Robinson leads the running game with 1,031 yards and 11 touchdowns. Receiver Trey Johnson has 42 catches for 660 yards and 12 touchdowns, including eight for 124 yards and a pair of scores against Marshall.“Any team that makes it to Level 4 is very deserving to be there,” Gorst said. “They are a good team, and we are excited to play them. They have a good mix of run and pass on offense and some good linebackers that make plays on defense. At the end of the day, it will come down to how well we execute, block, and tackle.”The Rockets should be well-prepared after having to grind it out for much of their game against Stratford.Spencer/Columbus drove 69 yards on 13 plays for a touchdown on its first possession, a 10-yard touchdown run by Hunter Hildebrandt. The Rockets went 81 yards in nine plays the first time they had the ball in the second half. Zastrow’s 39-yard run, the longest offensive play of the game for Spencer/Columbus, helped set up a Luepke 2-yard touchdown.“Our guys knew to expect a very good and well-prepared Stratford defense,” Gorst said. “We knew we would have to grind out some drives and not rely on big plays as they are a very sound tackling team. We hurt ourselves in the first half with turnovers. We knew we had to stay focused in the second half and limit mistakes to pull off double-digit play drives.”Paul Lecker is publisher of MarshfieldAreaSports.com, a contributor to Hub City Times Sports. Grassroots soccer talent nurtured in Port Elizabeth

first_imgHosted at Young Park Primary school in Young Park, 16 primary schools from Schauderville and Kwazakhele were invited to participate in the workshop (Image: Chevrolet Ute Force)The Chevrolet Ute Force, in partnership with the Dreamfields Project, a non-profit organisation that focuses on soccer development, rolled out its coaching workshop in Port Elizabeth this week.Hosted at Young Park Primary school in Young Park, 16 primary schools from Schauderville and Kwazakhele were invited to participate in the workshop that provided them with basic coaching skills and intra school league training. Thirty teachers and seven General Motors employees participated in the workshop and in turn will develop aspirant soccer stars in their communities. The seven Schauderville Schools are De Vos Malan Primary, GJ Louw Primary, Dieterich Primary, St.Theresa Primary, Frank Joubert Primary, Abraham Levy Primary, Adolph Schauder Primary, and Young Park Primary School. The eight Kwazakele Schools are Henry Nginza Primary, Ebhongweni Primary, Phakama Primary, JK Zondi Primary, Inkqubela Primary, BJ Mnyanda Primary, Ben Nyati Primary, and WB Tshume Primary.According to Chevrolet brand manager Tim Hendon, the partnership with Dreamfields Project, has enabled Chevrolet to reach many disadvantaged communities where soccer is popular amongst youth. “Each participant will receive a certificate of completion after the workshop which makes them eligible to coach and arrange intra school league games in the future,” said Hendon. He explained that the initiative links back to the Dreamfields Project’s goal of supporting the South African Football Association Development Agency’s (SAFADA) 2022 Vision, which highlights the need for coaches and the need of finding and grooming talent. “Chevrolet Ute Force has pledged its commitment to this vision, and provides not only funding but also donates One World Futbol soccer balls and soccer equipment and the use of utility bakkies to reach remote communities,” Hendon added.Earlier this year Chevrolet donated 55 000 One World Futbol, soccer balls to SAFADA. These balls are nearly indestructible and were designed to withstand gruelling conditions and rough surfaces. “Children train with the balls and are able to play with them over and over again without the fear of the ball going flat, this provides them with the needed training time before playing league games.“As part of our ‘What do you #PlayFor?‘ campaign introduced in April of this year, we will continue to support communities and the beautiful game of soccer – building the nation through play.”In the spirit of the Chevrolet Ute Force project, which is collaborative in nature and aims to share with people across the country, challenging South Africans to support their communities – a mini documentary of the Port Elizabeth project will be created. Spear headed by the creative team of BoltonInc, cinematographer Louis Bolton has captured the dreams of communities through the Ute Force initiative from day one.Traveling with the team to Port Elizabeth, Bolton believes that it is through sharing stories that real change can be achieved. He is joined by producer and Ute Force Project manager Bridgette Bolton who oversees the roll-out of the Chevrolet Ute Force project from one community to the next.last_img read more

Patents in the Cloud: Cloud Solutions Vulnerable to Patent Claims

first_imgThere’s a race among cloud vendors Amazon, Microsoft, Google and IBM. But the race isn’t just about securing the most revenues from customers, there’s also a race for claiming territory by filing patents on intellectual property. In 2017, for example, IBM filed 9043 patents, the most they’ve ever filed, passing the milestone of 100,000 patents, and of those patents, 1900 were related to cloud computing.Similarly, Amazon also has thousands of cloud-related patents and filed another 500 in 2017.  The creation and securing of intellectual property with patents has been part of Amazon’s strategy since their launch of AWS. David Pratt, Managing Director at MCAM, said that “that strategy very much empowered their business to allow them to have a huge lead in cloud. In turn, it made it more complex and costly for competitors to stand up their cloud capability.”The increase use of the cloud and number of cloud patents in turn has led to an explosion in patent infringement litigation.  Cloud technology patent litigation is up 700 percent over the last four years.  A big reason for the increase is litigation arising from patent assertion entities (PAEs) which do not typically create intellectual property, but instead acquire it and then try to monetize the patents by suing companies that they say are infringing on their purchased patents.Tim Pohlmann, CEO at IPlytics, wrote that “cloud technologies are often believed to rely fundamentally on shared environments following public standards. However, the presented numbers show that cloud technologies are increasingly subject to patent litigation. This may in fact block the open use and commercialization of future cloud-based solutions. Cloud computing technologies are complex systems with millions of applications that are incorporated in various products or services. Broadly written patent claims may therefore touch an unforeseeable range of cloud-based solutions, creating unpredictable legal risks for every business using cloud technologies.”last_img read more

The Clincher: Multitouch Ultrabooks Still Reliant on Touchpads

first_imgRelated Posts Three years ago, during the nadir of the last economic downturn, the netbook form factor helped rescue an ailing PC industry. Intel was reluctant to acknowledge that fact until at least a whole year later. Many netbooks were based on the first single-core Intel Atom processors. They too had touchpads. But these early netbooks weren’t beholden to a manufacturer’s standard, in order to qualify for a certification program (today’s Intel Ultrabook program uses the word “inspired” rather than “certified”). So a standard setter like the Asus Eee PC 701 could feature a 7-inch diagonal screen with 800 x 480 resolution, and fold up to 6.5″ x 8.9″ – smaller than today’s iPad. By comparison, HP’s Folio 13 has a 13.3″ diagonal screen. Among the other ultrabook models Synaptics mentioned today: Acer’s Aspire S3-951 series (right), also available now, measures 8.6″ x 12.7″ with a 13.3″ diagonal screen; Lenovo’s u300s measures 8.5″ x 12.75″ with a 13.3″ diagonal; and Toshiba Portege Z830 (shown in the video above) measures 9″ x 12.44″ with a 13.3″ diagonal screen. Synaptics today mentions Intel’s minimum target screen size of 11.1 inches, and its upper bounds of about 13 inches. If you were to shrink these “stage 2″ ultrabooks for Intel’s lower screen bounds, and still leave room for the touchpad, the resulting size would still be close to 8″ x 11.5” – still just beyond the target typing paper benchmark for a tablet. This matters to the accessories market, which has already seen a resurgence thanks to the iPad, Amazon Kindle, B&N Nook, and Samsung Galaxy Tab. No matter how thin an ultrabook becomes (expect thinner than 0.75″), there’s an entire market catering to scholars that won’t take it seriously unless it scales down to legal pad-size or below. What’s more, consumers may – even subconsciously – conclude ultrabooks are less practical than tablets with respect to portability. During the (brief) heyday of the netbook, consumers stated size was at least as important to their purchasing decision as price. Intel may need to consider this fact before it creates the next great novelty form factor, and perhaps put some of that $300 million ultrabook fund toward expediting the development of touchscreens. Tags:#mobile#Trends scott fulton The promises from Intel on the week before CES 2012 in Las Vegas speak of a device that’s as lightweight as a tablet, but that has the full keyboard users require to do real-world work, and the Windows 8 operating system they need for their everyday software. It’s a “tablet plus,” if you will. But will you really be able to touch an ultrabook’s screen the same way you would a tablet’s screen?A statement this morning from Synaptics, the principal maker of touchpads for notebook computers, reveals that many of the spotlighted PCs with Intel’s new ultrabook form factor will indeed be multitouch, but not on the screen. Although Synaptics does make capacitative touchscreen control chips, the older, separate touchpad units remain Synaptics’ bread-and-butter. And that affects two components of the overall form factor that could impact consumers’ comparisons of ultrabooks with tablets like Apple’s iPad: size and weight. As Intel rolls out “phase 2” of its Ultrabook (capital “U”) adoption guidelines for this year, it specifies the use of Intel’s own integrated HD graphics processors. That compels manufacturers such as HP, Acer, and Toshiba to build systems with bigger screens in the 16:9 aspect ratio that consumers expect with “HD” video. Although the iPad is marketed as the perfect device for remote streaming video, its 7.31″ x 9.5″ size means HD video requires letterboxing, the lack of which is supposed to be one of the Intel form factor’s key advantages. So ultrabook screens must be wide by definition. The inclusion of a Synaptics touchpad in addition to the wide screen will make the 2012 round of ultrabooks big – perhaps too big for consumers to consider them in the same league with tablets. For example, HP’s first ultrabook – its recently released Folio 13 – is 8.67 inches tall, incorporating the combined height of the keyboard and the touchpad below it. To accommodate the HD aspect ratio, though, it becomes 12.54 inches wide – more than an ordinary sheet of typing paper, which is the usual benchmark for a “tablet” form factor. And though ultrabooks will be marketed as lightweight, that measurement will no doubt be in comparison to typical notebook PCs – many of which are actually no larger. The Folio 13 will be 3.3 pounds, according to HP specs. An iPad, by comparison, weighs just 1.33 pounds. And don’t forget, this is the same ground on which Chennai had put up an intimidating 242 against the Dolphins. Will they be able to tame Kolkata’s bowling attack tonight in the absence of Narine? Or, will Gautam Gambhir lead his team to their first World T20 League title? Toss and teams coming up in a few minutes. On the other hand, Chennai is a team used to entering the semi-finals on a dramatic note. On most occasions, they have to rely on others in the group to push them through. However, once they reach the semis, it becomes very difficult to stop them. Despite starting off poorly in the semi-final against Punjab, their batsmen amassed an impressive 182. They followed it by cleverly using their bowling resources to destroy Punjab’s batting line-up. Chennai hold a 9-6 advantage over Kolkata in T20s. The last time they reached the final in 2010, they comfortably defeated the Warriors.Whistle Podu? Or, Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo Re? 17 days and 22 games later the World T20 league has come down to an all-Indian clash between Chennai and Kolkata. What makes the event even more interesting is that, Kolkata’s most influential bowler, Sunil Narine, will not be able to bowl in the final as he has been banned for a suspect bowling action. There is little doubt over the batting ability of Gambhir’s men. They pack an explosive line-up comprising of experienced and hard-hitting batsmen. However, their bowling (which has been largely dependent on Narine so far) will have plenty of soul-searching to do. Also, having played all their group matches in Hyderabad, Kolkata will face a tricky task of getting used to the conditions in Bangalore. Toss: Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to field first against Kolkata Knight Riders. You wait all year for such a big game – The final of a mega tournament. And then… BOOM! The best bowler in T20s gets called for chucking and will miss one of the most important matches of his T20 career and his team’s history. Kolkata’ Sunil Narine will miss out on playing in the Champions League T20 2014 final against Chennai as the West Indian mystery spinner was banned from bowling after authorities found his action suspect for the 2nd time in as many matches. The indomitable Chennai, on the other hand, will have the advantage of familiarity with the conditions but the unbeaten Indian Premier League Champions would still be a tough nut to crack when they clash in the final at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.Quotes:”We are working as hard as if we are on a losing streak. As long as we keep doing that, there’s no reason why we can’t continue like this. We have a big final and we will start on naught. We will need a big performance and I know the guys will be up for it and looking forward to it,” Kolkata veteran Jacques Kallis said.”We are very driven to win this tournament. Chennai have always been consistent but we want to win trophies. It really means a lot for us and we especially want to win this one because its been quite some time since we last won a trophy,” Chennai’s Mr. Dependable Faf du Plessis said.Kolkata Knight Riders:A look at the stats, and you would be forgiven for choosing Kolkata as the favourites. They have been on a roll after an unbeaten run in the tournament. They have, in fact, registered 14 wins in a row starting from IPL-7, but recent developments would argue with your decision, and with good reasons, too.Kolkata skipper Gautam Gambhir is enterprising and has shared an intense rivalry with Dhoni in IPL, coming out trumps against the India captain on quite a few occasions. The Kolkata are coming into the title clash with the tag of invincible post their 14th straight win — a seven-wicket victory over Australias Hobart Hurricanes in the first semifinal.Kolkata, unlike Chennai, have played all their group matches in Hyderabad and will have to get used to the conditions quickly in Bengaluru. The IPL-Champions, though, boasts of batsmen such as Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey and Jacques Kallis, all of whom have loads of experience and are in good form as well.In the bowling department, there is bound to be some turmoil and soul-searching after mystery spinner Sunil Narine was banned from bowling in the final. Young Kuldeep Yadav and all-rounders such as Yusuf Pathan, Ryan ten Doeschate and Andre Russel have been quite successful.Chennai Super Kings:Chennai had to depend on other teams results to make the last-four stage. Led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the team, however, has the ability to turn it around, a quality which was evident in the semifinal against a power-packed Punjab side. Dhoni knows the art of utilising his resources aptly, sometimes leaving rival captains too stunned by his decisions on batting and bowling combinations, besides field placements.Coming into the match after handing a crushing 65-run defeat to Punjab in the second semifinal, Chennai would love to exploit the placid Chinnaswamy pitch, where they played most of their group matches.Opener Dwayne Smith, who had a pretty good season last IPL but has been disappointing in CLT20, would look to make amends. He has the quality to put the opposition attack to the sword and will relish taking on KOL’s Narine-less attack. The swashbuckling Brendon McCullum has been inconsistent; he, too, would like to get into the groove and give a launch pad to the likes of Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis.Dwayne Bravo, who missed the last IPL season, has again proved his mettle with both bat and ball in the tournament. The West Indian all-rounder was the star in his teams last match, smashing 67 off 39 balls, while Ravindra Jadeja would also be eager to show his all-round prowess. On the bowling front, bowlers like Ashish Nehra, Jadeja, R Ashwin, Mohit Sharma and Bravo can trouble most teams on a given day. In their last match, Sharma, Nehra, Pawan Negi and Raina looked to be in top form, and coupled with their brilliant fielders, CHN will hope for a repeat performance in their most important match of the series.Teams(from):Chennai Super Kings: Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Smith, Suresh Raina, Brendon McCullum, MS Dhoni(c/wk), Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishwar Pandey, Mohit Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Mithun Manhas, Pawan Negi, John Hastings, Samuel BadreeKolkata Knight Riders: Gautam Gambhir(c), Robin Uthappa(wk), Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan, Ryan ten Doeschate, Suryakumar Yadav, Andre Russell, Piyush Chawla, Sunil Narine, Vinay Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Jacques Kallis, Pat Cummins, Manvinder Bislalast_img read more
