LATVIAN rolling stock repair business Lokomotive has been bought by two Estonian firms for an undisclosed sum. Wagon parts supplier Skinest Projekt acquired its share through the purchase of Remlok, which owned a 49% stake in the company, while freight shipper Spacecom acquired a 36·4% stake in Lokomotive from Parangon. One of two rolling stock maintenance firms in Latvia, Lokomotive is based in the city of Daugavpils where it employs around 2500 people. In 2003 it repaired 134 diesel and 203 electric locomotives, reporting profits of 183500lats on a turnover of 11·4m lats. In the first quarter of 2004 the firm reported a loss of 322000 lats on a turnover of 2·5m. Up to 70% of Lokomotive’s business is for Russian customers, but work is also carried out for the Baltic states, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The new owners are planning a €3m investment programme for the plant. Chairman of Skinest Projekt Oleg Osinovski told the local media that ’Lokomotive has lost a significant market share both in the Baltic states and in the east’ in recent years, but ’by modernising the plant we hope to regain its former position.’

Just 43 days ago, Anhalt dropped to the court during a team practice in full cardiac arrest.Calvary Christian’s Luke Anhalt handles the defensive pressure just before making an assist. Photo/Jason GoormanHe was revived by Fruitport Calvary head coach Jeff Zehr, who administered an AED (automated eternal defibrillator) to the 17-year-old senior. What could have ended in tragedy turned into an inspiring story on Friday night, when Anhalt shocked everyone by returning to the court and starting for the Eagles in their homecoming game against Holland Calvary. In the days following the incident, he thought his season, and his varsity career, were over. But new hope arose in the last few weeks, and he got the chance to return to his team, after all.“A couple of weeks ago, we were talking about the stress test coming up, and it was mentioned as a possibility, so since then, I was like, I must, must, must come back,” Anhalt said.He passed the stress test, got the green light from his doctors, and was ready to roll with his teammates on Friday.“They got to see it end up as a good positive,”Anhalt said after the game. “They got to see me being back to myself again, and I think it’s really good for them.”Before the game, players for both teams were introduced, except for Anhalt.Luke Anhalt turns to hustle back on defense after scoring his first two points since returning back to the court for Calvary Christian. Photo/Jason GoormanThen Anhalt’s father, Dr. Jeff Anhalt, delivered a message of faith to the crowd about God’s role in his son’s recovery. After the message, a curtain behind the scorer’s table was opened, revealing a large image of Luke Anhalt with his arms spread wide, holding a basketball.Anhalt was then introduced to a loud ovation, and the game began like any other Friday night high school basketball contest.“It was a lot of nerves,” said Luke about his feelings before tip-off. “I was just thanking God for the opportunity. I didn’t think I’d ever get to do this again.”Luke wore a cardiac monitor on his left shoulder around his armpit, which was bluetooth connected to his apple watch that Jeff Anhalt monitored from the scorer’s table. When Luke came out of the game periodically, his father often came to the bench to made sure his son was feeling the way the monitor was indicating.“I just monitored the readings,” Jeff Anhalt said. “I just went to go check on him and see how his fatigue level was, and how he was feeling.”Zac Zehr makes a ball fake as he sets up the play for Calvary Christian. Photo/Jason GoormanNobody could blame Luke for feeling a little fatigue, after playing 26 of 32 minutes. He only returned to practice on Wednesday, after being cleared to return to the team earlier that day.“I’m so out of shape,” said Luke after the 50-44 victory. “I’m exhausted.”Overall, Luke played a crucial role for the Eagles, totaling 11 points, eight rebounds and one assist in the victory. With 30 seconds left, Luke made the key play in the game, stealing a cross-court pass around mid-court and taking it all the way to the hoop for a layup, giving Fruitport Calvary a 48-43 lead.“It couldn’t be a bigger win for our school,” Coach Zehr said after the game. “I mean, how do you script it? Given it’s homecoming and the struggles we’ve had with losing Luke, and now having him come back. You couldn’t script it any better.“I hope the community sees the positive side of what happened with Luke, due to being prepared and believing in God.” Inappropriate / Offensive (2) Share DEAL OF THE DAY Other DEAL OF THE DAY Report a problem This item is… ENDS IN Thank you! England’s Chris Wood secured the first win of his professional career last Sunday with a two-shot victory in a rain-interrupted U.S. $1 million Thailand Open, breaking the hearts of home fans seeking a first Thai champion in eight years. Hard-charging Thais Arnond Vongvanij (65) and Wisut Artjanawat (67) battled to catch the strapping 1.96-metre (6 ft 5 inch) Wood, but had to settle for a share of third place with Korean Lee Dong-hwan (67).Alone in second was Jang Dong-kyu, also of Korea, who completed the first nine holes in just 29 shots en-route to a closing 63 and the best result of his career.“It is brilliant – I am really, really pleased,” Wood said, after what appeared to be a victory march from the 17th was interrupted by a rain delay of over an hour.“It is hard winning. I always felt that once I got one win it would give me the confidence to go on and win more, so hopefully I can take this confidence back to the remainder of the tournaments I have got for the season.”Thailand has not produced a home winner of the National Open since Boonchu Ruangkit won his second in 2004.(Source – OneAsia.asia) The 24-year-old European Tour regular — competing in a OneAsia Tour event for the first time — fired rounds of 67, 64, 67 and 67 for a 23-under par total of 265, although preferred lies were allowed because of soggy conditions at the 6,471 metre (7,077 yard) Suwan Golf & Country Club on the outskirts of Bangkok.Chris Wood holds up the Thailand Open trophy after securing victory with a final round 67 at the Suwan Golf & Country Club, Sunday, August 12. There are tons of brain training games out there, but I’ve never heard of one that works as well as DRUGS before. Researchers at the University of Cambridge in England recently created a brain training game called Decoder, where your goal is to spot sequences of numbers. They found that it temporarily boosted people’s concentration so well, it was as effective as taking RITALIN. If you’re not familiar, Ritalin is what they give people with ADHD to help them focus. And they just ran a study where they had people play the game for a little while, and then take a test. You can download an app with the game for free by searching for Peak Brain Training. It comes bundled with a bunch of other games, but as far as we know, they don’t work quite as well as the Decoder game. Decoder is already included on the app for iPhones and should hit Android devices later this year.
The X-15 rocket plane. Photo: NASA From grooved runways to rocket planes, NASA has been at the cutting edge of aviation technology and is still pushing the envelope at age 60.When it comes to aviation icons it’s hard to go past the X-15 rocket plane built by North American Aviation and operated jointly by NASA and the US Air Force. The X-15 set the world record for the highest speed ever by a manned, powered aircraft in October 1967 when it flew at 6.73 times the speed of sound, or 4,520mph (7,274kmh) at an altitude or more than 100,000 ft.Boeing’s proposed hypersonic-passenger transport will benefit from NASA technology.Ultimately powered by a Thiokol XLR-99 rocket engine, it reached an altitude of 354,200ft and contributed greatly to the space program by providing valuable data on aerodynamics, structures, flight controls and the impact on humans of high-speed, high altitude flight.READ: Red planet still beckons as NASA turns 60The hypersonic plane was drop-launched from a B-52 bomber and flew 199 missions — a 200th flight was canceled because of technical problems — before it was retired. But the X-15 may now have a competitor in an uber-cool new X-plane set to make supersonic travel easy by greatly limiting sonic booms. The new X plane. Image: NASAThe US space agency has awarded a $US247.5 million contract to Lockheed Martin to build from scratch a needle-nosed aircraft that could happily grace any chapter of the Star Wars franchise. The 94-foot long plane is expected to start test flights in 2021 and fly at a cruising altitude of 55,000ft at Mach 1.42, or 940mph (1512kmh), with a top speed of Mach 1.5.It will use the latest in supersonic technologies to reduce the window-shaking sonic boom to a thump equivalent to the noise of car door closing. The single-pilot X plane will be propelled by a General Electric F414 engine used by F/A-18 fighters. A single pilot will be in a cockpit based on the design of the rear seat of the T-38 training jet famously used for years by NASA astronauts.A tentative schedule sees a critical design configuration review in 2019 that, if successful, leads to the construction of the aircraft at Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works facility in Palmdale, California, and delivery to NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in 2021.A second phase beginning 2022 will see NASA fly the plane at the supersonic test range in Edwards to prove the quiet supersonic technology works as expected and the plane is safe.A series of trials will be conducted between 2022 and 2025 over four to six US cities to gauge community response to the technology.NASA says key to success for the Low-Boom Flight Demonstrator will be sonic booms “so quiet, people on the ground will hardly notice them if they hear them at all”.It plans to deliver the data to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 2025 so they can develop and adopt new rules to allow commercial supersonic flight over land.Nor have striking, needle-nosed planes been NASA’s only contribution to the world.Computer technology developed for the Space Shuttle program is used in commercial and military aircraft while the variable density wind tunnel operated by NASA’s forerunner, NACA, at Langley from the 1920s put the agency at the forefront of global aeronautics research. The variable wind tunnel. Photo: NASAThe test results from the variable density tunnel were superior to any previous design and made Langley a world leader in aerodynamic research for the next decade.READ a day on the NASA DC-8.NASA’s research into high-speed aircraft improved many of the features in commercial aircraft and the agency helped develop the digital “fly-by-wire” system used in modern jetliners to control flight surfaces.Winglets, the upturned tips of wings that save airlines billions in fuel costs, were also a product of advances made by NASA researchers. On the ground, grooved runways developed by NASA in the 1960s to increase traction and stop aircraft sliding after landing are now used around the world. There’s also an anti-icing system for single-engine planes. The space agency says its most ubiquitous spinoff was the sensor now used in most digital cameras, video cameras and smartphones.Invented at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor was the brainchild of NASA scientist Eric Fossum and revolutionized photography.Photo: NASAOther spinoffs include a red light emitting diode used for growing plants in space that has been adapted to provide temporary relief from minor muscle and joint pain, the infrared ear thermometer and a life-saving heart pump.NASA even had a hand, along with Black & Decker, in the development of compact cordless power tools and its ultra-strong alloys have had a dramatic effect on the way golf clubs and other sporting equipment is manufactured.Packaging developed to keep food stable and safe for astronauts has improved food safety and home air purifiers use plug-in filters designed to help plants thrive in space.Memory foam also came from NASA as did freeze-dried food and “space blankets” used by emergency services.

Inter boss Antonio Conte is aiming to equal his own record for best start to a Serie A season, set with Juventus in 2012-13 and 2013-14. Inter travel to the Stadio dall’Ara to face Bologna this afternoon, and if Conte’s side emerge victorious, it would equal his best start to a season in his coaching career. A win would give Conte 28 points from 11 games. This would equal his current record, which he gained when boss of Juventus in 2012-13 and 2013-14. In 2012-13 in fact, Conte had already reached 28 points by the 10th game, but in Week 11 Juve were defeated by Andrea Stramaccioni’s Inter, a result that ended Juve’s 49-game unbeaten streak. At this stage in his first season at Chelsea, he was on 25 points. His second season was slightly worse, ending on 22 points. With Bari in Serie B, in 2008-09, it was his worst start to a season, and had 17 points. His other Serie B experience, with Siena, saw him record 22 points by this stage.
